Bio
Originally hailing from St. Louis, Missouri, Tessa is a visual artist currently based in Tucson, Arizona. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors and Marvin Klaven Art Award from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, and has since been working towards completing a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Arizona.
Her work is a nuanced exploration of the artist's relationship with self-image and the lasting effects of personal trauma, specifically in the aftermath of sexual assault. Laslo uses her art to convey the enduring imprints, both mental and physical, that linger long after such experiences. Laslo invites viewers to consider the subtle complexities of her personal journey, using her art as a medium for contemplation and dialogue around issues that resonate on a deeply human level.
Artist Statement
In my artistic exploration, I delve into the intricate web of personal trauma, investigating its impact on my body, relationships, and self-perception. The lingering effects of sexual assault have not only left me grappling with fragmented memories and physical scars but have also ignited a profound anger—an emotion that pervades my work and influences my ability to portray intimate relationships.
Anger, a powerful undercurrent in my artistic expression, stems not only from what I have experienced, but from the ongoing emotional and physical ramifications that are likely to persist throughout my life. It is a visceral response to the violation of my autonomy and the enduring consequences that ripple through my existence. This anger weaves itself into the fabric of my art, becoming both a driving force and a palpable element that shapes the narrative of my creations.
The emotional and physical effects of the trauma, while profound, are not portrayed as insurmountable obstacles in my art but rather as integral components of an ongoing narrative. Through my work, I strive not only to convey the lasting impact of personal trauma but also to illuminate the resilience and strength that can emerge from a process of artistic confrontation and self-discovery.
